Now that's a Romance Novel

I love weddings.  I love books.  Shoot, that's why I have both a wedding blog AND a book blog.  So what happens when books and romance collide?

You get one heck of a creative proposal!  I was perusing my favorite blog sites and Luxury Reading posted a blog featuring an image of the day.  It was a photo of a recently engaged couple.  The lucky lady's boyfriend embedded an engagement ring, box and all, into a book.  When she opened it, there it was!  What an awesome proposal!  Now that's a romance novel!

Congratulations to the happy couple!  View their photo at Shelf Awareness

Friday Finds: Anne of Green Gables

Anne of Green Gables, 100th Anniversary EditionMy all-time favorite book is Anne of Green Gables by L.M Montgomery.  A few years ago, when visiting a friend in Atlanta, I came across a leather-bound vintage copy of this heartwarming novel in a used bookstore.  It is, by far, one of my absolute prized possessions.

Since then, I've kept my eye out for different editions of this story and noticed that the 100th Anniversary Edition was released a couple years ago!  I think I may pick that one up to add to my collection/wishlist!

I also love the movies and on rainy days, my sister and I snuggle on the sofa and watch both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea.  I could never get enough of it.  I love my Anne.

Theater Review: Wicked

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Harper Fiction)For Valentine's Day, my husband got me the highly coveted tickets to the production of Wicked.  I've waited years to watch this show and was thrilled to hear that the production made its way to the Orpheum theater in San Francisco.

The show went beyond my expectations!  Our show had an extremely talented ensemble including Libby Servais (Glinda - with a silent 'Ga'.  LOL), Vicki Noon (Elphaba), DeeDee Hall (Nessarose) and Tom McGowan (the Wizard).  Servais brought a vivacious charm and an elegant grace to her role as Glinda.  And Vicki Noon!!  Wow, what a dramatic, powerhouse!  Her voice took my breath away.  When she closed out the first half with Defying Gravity, I was moved.  It was the kind of rendition that left you with goosebumps.  Absolutely incredible.

The two actresses had a great chemistry on the stage.  It was easy to buy into their earlier revulsion to each other; then their growing understanding, friendship, love and, in the end, loyalty.  They did a fabulous job telling the story to the audience.  Coupled with their vocal talents, it was perfection!

After the show, we took our requisite pictures in the front of the theater and waited for the cast to sign our programs.  Yes, I love any chance to be papparazzi!  We were fortunate to meet some of the cast including both Libby and Vicki!

Their personality and charm were in full force on the streets of San Francisco and were just as infectious.  I can't believe how TINY they are!  Libby Servais was as cute as a button, exuding the same energy as her onstage persona.  I was almost expecting her to do a little leg kick in emphasis to her glee!  LOL
Vicki Noon, sans makeup, chatted with us for a little bit and worried over us posting facebook photos without her signature green make-up.  The horror!  But she was adorable!  She left me in awe.  This was the same young woman that belted out Defying Gravity to an entire theater.

I highly recommend seeing this show if you're ever given the opportunity.  It is fabulous and one of my absolute favorites!  You'd definitely be in for a treat.

Author Interview with Sara Donati

Oh, parting is such sweet sorrow.

The Endless Forest: A NovelWhen I first picked up Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati, I didn't realize that I would be taken on a journey with the Bonner family spanning over several years.  Now, with the series coming to its conclusion with The Endless Forest, I'm more than just a little sad to have to say good-bye.

I am excited, however, that Sara Donati has taken time out of her day to speak with MBB about her life with the Bonners and what memories she came away with at the end.

Please welcome Sara Donati, the author of The Wilderness Series!

With six books in the series, it has been an incredible journey for the Bonner family, and for you I presume. What has been the most rewarding and most challenging experience for you? How do you feel to see it end?

It's hard to pinpoint one specific experience. The section of Fire Along the Sky that took place in Manhattan was a big challenge. There was so little information available and it took a great deal of digging, but the end product was very rewarding.

I don't feel sad or unhappy about the last book. I've been working on the Wilderness series a long time, and I'm afraid that if I had pushed any farther the quality of the storytelling would have suffered. I wanted to close the door on a high point.

Of the 6 books in the series, which one was your favorite?

I have favorite sections of all the novels, but my two favorites are Lake in the Clouds and Queen of Swords.
Both of those books were my personal favorites!  My favorite character was Hannah, so her story was the one I waited for in anticipation.  And you definitely didn't disappoint.

Which characters and moments left imprints on your heart?

It's hard to let bad things happen to good characters, but that's the lot of stoytellers. I felt sorrow at various points - a number of them with Selah Voyager, and with Gabriel Oak and a number of other characters.

I love happy endings so the epilogue was a bit of a mixed bag for me. What prompted you to write the epilogue?

Closure. I knew some readers wouldn't be happy with it, but it was important to me to bring Elizabeth and Nathaniel to a close. It was also important to me to establish some basic facts about the next generation.

What’s next for you? Do you think you’ll write another series?

At the moment I'm not writing fiction. Or I'm writing very, very little fiction. I don't know yet if this is just a long sabbatical or if I'm done. I hope I will have the time and opportunity to write some of the stories that are still active in my mind, but right now I have to address different priorities.

Thank you so much Sara, for taking the time to speak with My Book Buddies.  And THANK YOU so much for the gift of the Bonner family.  I certainly hope we haven't seen the last of you!  Reading your novels has been like traveling to a far distant place.  Many members of the MBB community enjoyed reading and discussing your novels in our forum.  I hope we see more from you again in the future.  Best of luck to you and your endeavors!

My Life as a Book Blogger

I think I've graduated from novice to, at least, intermediate when it comes to book blogging.  The My Book Buddies blog has been in existence now since June 2009.  Wow, that's almost a year.  I'll have to make a mental note to prepare for that first year anniversary!  But My Book Buddies has been around far longer than that - starting with the very first post in our online forum back in July 2001.

Jane Eyre (Collector's Library)If you didn't know, MBB started off as an online book discussion group.  In fact, our first book discussion was on Jane Eyre.  I added the blog element to it to share my own reviews, meet other book bloggers and create more interaction with authors and publishers.  Now, approaching that one year anniversary, I'm a little in awe at what MBB has become.  It certainly isn't easy, but it still continues to be a joy.

The purpose of the original book club was to open up our literary horizons.  We wanted to learn about new authors, genres and even share personal experiences during our discussions.  The blog enhances that original mission.

My typical day as a book blogger starts with reviewing the 'outline' for the week.   It usually consists of
  1. Book news
  2. Upcoming reviews
  3. Update Memes
  4. Meet and Greet authors/publishers
  5. Book events
I spend the earlier part of my day visiting my favorite bloggers to see what's new in their world.  If something catches my eye on their blog, I make a point of sharing it here.  This includes reviews, chats and contests.

I then visit favorite literary news websites, specifically The New York Times, USA Today, San Franscisco Chronicle and a handful of social networking sites.  The purpose?  To read up on the latest hot spots in literature and to post suggestions here on the blog.  I also use this information to contact the authors and publishers of upcoming releases to try and obtain advance copies to review on MBB.

Book reviews, of course, are a given on this site.  As I read a book, I have my handy-dandy notebook to jot down my thoughts.  When I'm done reading a book, I pull that notebook out and I write my review.  Oh yes, I am old fashion that way.  I write it all down.  I've found it's the easiest way for me to organize my thoughts, to review my structure and to make sure it all makes sense.  Then, I type it up.  I don't know why writing is easier than typing, but for me it is.

If I'm lucky, those book reviews will also open up opportunities for author chats or guest spots - or a great book giveaway.  I've been extremely fortunate to meet generous authors who are willing to share their time and their thoughts to our readers.

Mixed in with all the standard posts are fun posts, like Snippet Sunday, Movie Reviews (particularly book to movie adaptations) and sometimes even a nostalgic wishlist post.  I do try to keep things interesting and diverse.  My biggest challenge has been finding interesting tidbits to post between book reviews without losing sight of the true purpose of this site.

While there are some days where my creativity (and time) prove to be road blocks, My Book Buddies is my baby.  I love what value it's given to my life in terms of literary enhancement and in friendship.  I hope that it continues to be a place where people enjoy visiting.

If you have any suggestions for this site, I always welcome them.  You can always e-mail me your thoughts at info@mybookbuds.com.
